Party Plaids and Tequila Tartans

Why J Crew’s Holiday Suiting Collection Could Land You Under the Mistletoe

by Logan Ross

While it may be getting colder and colder outside, it’s the holiday season that can always be relied on for all the warm fuzzies inside. For some, this means that exams are coming to an end, and you’re ready to hit up a few house parties. For others, it means your inbox is filling up with emails planning the much deserved holiday party at work. Either way, you’re going to want to be looking your holiday best so you can impress your boss (or that cute classmate or co-worker).

You won’t have to do much running around to outfit yourself for the festivities either – that is, as long as there is a J Crew close to you.

Roxanne, one of J Crew’s super stylish merchants, said “This holiday season we really want to be the destination for party dressing for our guy,” and they’ve gone out and done just that.

The classic American brand has done holiday dressing better than anyone this season, releasing their best and most fun December suiting collection yet. Even if a full suit may be a little beyond your years yet, Roxanne can assure you that J Crew has your bases covered for looking fresh. She says that in the new collection, it’s the specialty fabrics and patterns the brand offers that will make your fit festive and fun, “From black watch pants to black watch ties, we have something that works for any occasion, it can be dressed up or dress down as needed”.

Compared to last year’s collection, this year’s is a standout improvement. J Crew’s signature house fit, the Ludlow, has been a success for them since it’s debut in 2008, but last year the holiday’s suiting department lacked a little holiday spirit. The annual dinner jacket and tuxedo installations were offered, but this year, “There is a lot of colour, there is a lot of pattern,” said Roxanne, “but it’s wearable and approachable”.

Andrew, another one of J Crew’s merchants focused on the holiday suiting collection, added that the fabrics have really stepped up to the (dinner) plate this year, saying “this year’s dinner jacket has a satin lapel, very elegant, yet really adds that pop of fun that you’re gonna want to have for your holiday party”.

Pop may be a bit of an understatement, as some jackets are being made almost completely out of these cheery, jolly fabrics. “We have a really fun holiday plaid, and a really nice black watch,” said Andrew.

While most dinner jackets retail for just under $700 Canadian, it’s important to remember the quality and value J Crew offers for entry level suiting is extremely hard to beat, with top-tier Italian mills producing second-to-none fabric. Just a few examples are household names to those who know their world-class suiting mills, such as Lanificio Campore, Tessuti Di Sondrio, Lanificio Del Tollegno, and Vitale Barberis Canonico.
